What is our only comfort in life and death? In all the difficulties of life and even in death and dying, how do we find comfort? How do we comfort each other? Listen to Rev. Though Job endured many difficulties he knew that those chosen by God in eternity are always the objects of His love; there is nothing that can separate us from this love.

Who is the Comforter? Exactly who is the One who comes to us to bring comfort?  Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the Comforter.  We read, “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name.”  Jesus says to us that God the Father will send to us the Holy Spirit in the authority of Jesus Christ in order that the Holy Spirit might be ours in our hearts. Listen to Rev Haak’s message here to hear more about our Comforter.

Our Comfort in dying: Death is a frightening reality. It is a frightening reality that also comes to the children of God, to you and to me. We can hardly bear thinking about death today. It is the separation of our loved one – our husband, our wife, our son, our daughter, our dear one, our child – and it is so final! Of itself, because death is the sentence of God upon sin, death is too much for us. But now, because of the cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, for all who belong to Jesus, death has become the door which brings them to the Lord, to the One who has bought us with His own blood. God’s Will. Things do not happen to us by chance. We are not like a floating bottle at sea, tossed around with no purpose or direction. We are not like feathers blown around here and there by the wind. But God, in His will, is leading us on to glory. In Psalm 73 we read, “Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.”

This is our confession: God is good. In all that He requires of us and in all that He has planned for His people, God is good. Listen to the message here.

Comfort in suffering because we know the victory is in Christ.   There is an important principle for the Christian life: Though you may look and feel defeated in this life, despised by others, weak in the battle with sin, dear believer, listen: There is victory in Christ. Preservation of the Saints:   “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” In John 10:28, Christ teaches that He gives His people eternal life already now, and therefore they shall never perish, and no one shall be able to pluck them out of His hands despite what trials we face here on earth.
